Burglars broke through a wall to rob an Apple store in the Seattle area

According to reports, burglars in a Seattle suburb last Sunday pulled off a brazen heist, digging a tunnel through the bathroom wall of a coffee maker store before sneaking into a neighboring Apple Store and stealing about $500,000 worth of merchandise.

The robbery included 436 iPhones, according to the Lynnwood Police Department announced Wednesday that no arrests had been made. There were no updates as of Friday afternoon, a department spokesman told SFGATE.

Police are still investigating and have declined to release the surveillance tape to local outlets. The burglary took place at an Apple store in a mall, an elegant, open-plan space with a wood-paneled ceiling and a large glass front.

The entry point appears to have been the Seattle Coffee Gear next door. The store’s regional manager, Eric Marks, told KOMO News that his front door was forced open, then the burglars appeared to have opened the store’s common wall and cut a “24 x 18 (inch) hole in the wall” into a back room of Apple’s retail store.

“I’m surprised we were their route to the Apple Store,” Marks said. “I had no idea we were that close or adjacent to them.”

The hole, cut through several layers of wall in a rectangle just big enough for an adult to crawl through, is located directly between the toilet and sink in Marks’ shop bathroom. The coffee equipment store has now replaced its locks, KOMO reported. Local police told the outlet that no fingerprints were left.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, did not respond to a request for comment.
